Mamallapuram

On our way to Pondicherry were amazing temples and structures, especially at Mamallapuram.

The five Rathas; a complex with very detailed carvings of the gods

Marc violating the sacred animal of India

                                          The Shore Temple

A whole side of a mountain had carvings such as these. Goats and cows are everywhere...

                                                                beeeee?

some magnificent temples

                                           a crowd of Indians

pretty impressive that the rock doesn't fall right? It illustrates the high technology of the time, when they still needed to chuck big rocks at enemies.

  1. Wow, if they had technology to chuck rocks that big at enemies, its a pretty big deal. It's called a cannon - even you must know that most armies even 300 ago used to use them. Now, thus structure is about 1200 years old, so go figure.

  2. Cannons can't throw rocks this size.
The idea was that the rocks were in place, and holding on the rock, but seeming as if they are about to fall. If enemies come running up the hill, they can let them loose on them.
This was at a time when Indians were *trying* to fight off islamist expansion. So go figure. ;)
